About

Hello, everyone. My name is Daniel Armstrong and I am an independent Linux developer. As of late I have been working aimlessly to provide the Linux community with a Veoh client. This blog is primarily target to those interested in knowing what I am doing, what I know about veoh and how I am making it work. You cannot download my source code from this site. You can only obtain information about my project.

Hi there. Seems I’m not the only one who wants another client, though I’m not aiming specifically for a linux client, but a cross platform one because the official one is crap. There’s some content I can’t find elsewhere though.

The lack of response in the forum is because most linux users see that it’s winmac only and go elsewhere. There isn’t much activity in those forums anyhow. I highly doubt you’ll receive an ‘okay’ to release this client, I wouldn’t sit waiting for one either.

The veoh protocol is pretty simple, I had figured in a short time enough to download videos on my client. I’ve not looked into how the clientGUID and the VEOH_GUIDE_AUTH cookie change between clients yet, but copying them from my client I can easily execute a download.

I’d debate whether to adapt the veoh protocol into an existing (OSS) bittorrent client or even democracy, and save the hassle of coding everything needed to organise files, QoS, RSS feeds etc. I find GUI making particularly boring.

Anyway, I can be the guy to “help figure out how veoh works”, although I don’t think you’ll have many hurdles. I can do any network programming you might want help with, though I’m strapped for time.

    Hey Mark,

I know how the time thing goes. The good thing about a project like this is most of the work goes into the code base. The primary concern is simply downloading the videos. After that is taken care of there is no other big task. I am trying to keep all of my code as cross platform as possible since I have seen so many people complain about the available clients. I was looking into extending Democracy but when I tried Democracy and Mirro out on my openSUSE box they were buggy and unstable as hell. Anyways, any information you can provide would be great.

    Hi Daniel,

a thousand thanks for your steady efforts! Vget is working very nicely and absolutely no hassle building and installing your framework on Ubuntu 7.04 i686. Keep up the great work! 🙂

I’ve made a little posting about your project:

Hey, first I would like to thank you for making this program.

I believe I have the version of vget from when it was put on sourceforge, but I’m not sure.

Anyway, I would like to inquire about the reason vget pauses for a second then downloads for a second alternating throughout the process of the download. It’s not troublesome, in fact it’s useful for me due to certain technical difficulties, but I thought I’d ask anyway. ^.^

(My router is horrible and when I download something for too long at full speed, around 200K/s, my router overheats and eventually goes down. x.x)

Well, I downloaded your source and had compile errors, something about gecko being incompatable, i think its because i’m using a 64-bit kernel running ubuntu linux, i’m sure it would work fine under a 32-bit os, but i dunno… anyway, i’m gonna look into it, and i’m going to try installing it on my other machine, wich is 32-bit and it should have been installed there in the first place. If I have any issues, I will be sure to let you know. Mostly I want to tinker with it, lol.

Seems like my last response wasn’t posted… Probably because I had javascripts blocked.
    @Mark:
I have a version of OpenVeoh that works on my 64-bit computer. If you would like to download it, you can get it here: http://www.box.net/shared/es65o2ued8

I haven’t made any changes to it, so it may or may not work for you, and you may have to recompile it, since it’s going to be on a different computer now, but you could give it a go. The download will be slightly large, since I didn’t clean anything up(Just put the entire folder, source and all, in an archive).

Hope it works for you as well. ^.^

P.S.: Make sure you have all the required libraries. 😉

  7. Benjamin Blanco Says:

    Well, it’s still working. ^.^

Had to download the one I put up because I lost it(I guess when I was shuffling files around for an OS change or something) but it worked without having to recompile or anything, so I’m happy I did.

Thanks again, hope things are going well.
